Some 31 children benefitted from the “Shop with a Cop” event hosted by New Lenox police and cadets in conjunction with Morningstar Mission and the New Lenox K Mart.
On Dec. 1, officers donated their time to take the group of children, ages 6 to 13, on a Christmas shopping spree. The children are selected by referrals from different social service agencies in the community.
The day started with a parade led by the police department to the New Lenox K Mart and then a visit with Santa. Each child received a $100 gift card, which had been donated, to buy items. After shopping, the children returned to the police department to have pizza, cupcakes and wrap their Christmas gifts. There were even some Christmas carols that were sung by the officers and kids.
The officers have started to plan for next year’s event and will try to sponsor an additional 20 children, police said.
