A century-old Green Garden Township home that has been vacant for at least five years was destroyed by fire Thursday morning, a Frankfort Fire Protection District official said.
Assistant Fire Chief Larry Rauch said the cause of the fire at the home at LaGrange and Stuenkel roads is under investigation.
The Will County land use department had been working with the homeowner — who lives in Florida — about cleaning up the site or demolishing the structure, Rauch said.
The 100-year-old house had no utilities, Rauch said. The fire was well under way by the time firefighters were alerted to it by a passing motorist on LaGrange Road shortly before 11 a.m., he said.
“We just kept the fire from spreading,” Rauch said. “I doubt if we’ll ever know how it started because the house was completely destroyed.”
