Mokena SD 159, youth teams trade field use for maintenance work

Updated: March 12, 2013 6:15AM

A pair of local youth sports organizations are going to be taking the field at Mokena School District 159 sites, in exchange for maintaining the facilities, as a result of an agreement approved by the District 159 board last week.

The Lincoln-Way Blue Demons baseball organization and Mokena Burros youth football and cheerleading teams will use Mokena Elementary School athletic fields from March 1 through Nov. 5 when the fields are not being used by the school. The teams will maintain the fields, including turf and facilities, according to the agreement.

Representatives of the Burros and Blue Demons said the loss of available space has caused them difficulties. Park district fields already are used by the Mokena Baseball/Softball Association, soccer teams, and the Mokena Junior Griffins youth football organization, among others.

Mike Bartos, president of the Blue Demons, said the organization has been losing space in a “kind of homeless two years” and was “starting to lose kids.” He said the Blue Demons would be willing to put $20,000 to $30,000 into field improvements.

Bartos said members of the organization also would help District 159 organize a junior high baseball team and provide volunteer coaches.
