Video gambling may be coming to New Lenox after all. If approved, only the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will have the machines.
The New Lenox Village Board is considering an ordinance that would allow state-sanctioned gambling only at fraternal and veterans organizations. Previously, the board voted against the measure because it believed it would not be able to limit it.
Mayor Tim Baldermann told trustees Monday he spoke with state legislators and their lawyers. He learned the village can approve these membership-based organizations through licensing since the village is home rule.
In the past, the majority of the board has favored allowing these clubs to have the gambling machines.
“Speaking candidly, they are our veterans and fought for our freedoms,” the mayor said.
Although none of the trustees had any questions or comments at Monday’s meeting, the mayor said he did not want to fast-track the issue. The ordinance is scheduled for a vote
at the next board meeting March 25.
