Here is a look at what Southlanders are accomplishing in school.
News from the SouthtownStar’s Central region includes Oak Forest, Orland Park, Lockport, Frankfort, New Lenox and Midlothian.
Several Oak Forest High School students were named Illinois State Scholars. They include:
Jeffrey Benin, Aldwin-Alexis Cabalfin, Benjamin Cheng, Karalyn Collazo, Jack Cramer, Taylor Dazzo, Julianna Dizonno, Kelly Gorney, Michael Guzy, Kayla Hendricks, Elise Hennessy, Annmarie Huet, Alyssa Johnson, Jeremy Kurtz, Jacob Lawrence, Rigoberto Lopez, Justine Luciano and Elzbieta Madej.
Also, Carolyn Mazzuca, Kelly McEathron, Manon Misheck, Riley Moss, Sarah Murray, Jasmin Parel, Amanda Perlinski, Jacob Sagan, Taylor Scholtens, Benjamin Slager, Bradley Smith, Sara Soltis, Cody Stuart, Jacob Toppen, Allison Tregoning, Heidi Triezenberg, Kevin Turek, Elizabeth Walker, Cody Wrzesinski, Thomas Zale and Jillian Zuccarelli.
Justin Gallagher and Dylan Klouda, both of Orland Park; and Brendan Dwyer, of Lockport; were named Illinois State Scholars. They are students at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago.
Art students at Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North high schools, both in Frankfort, and Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way West high schools, both in New Lenox, won Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention awards at the regional Scholastics Art Competition.
Gold Key award winners include Raegan Campbell, Dayna Grybas, Rachel Murff, Madeline Rittgers, Luke Shepard, Tim Smith, Justas Varpucanskis, Shayvonna Albrecht, Amanda Jonker, Gina Sipka, Alyssa Sparacino, Kayla Wolfe, Julia Downs, Paige Payne, Ashley Radusewicz, Will Baker, Jessica Karlic, Sami Perillo and Brianna Rose.
Silver Key award winners include Jeremy Bieser, Christine Boenzi, Michael Crowley, Jordan Landis, Madeline Rittgers, Julie Ruvoli, Randi Bertolani, Gina Sipka, Alyssa Sparacino, Kayla Wolfe, Savannah Allen, Rachel Bell, Julia Downs, Dan Farrelly, Katie Jandeska, Kassandra Luna, Bridget Turrisi, Lindsey Anderson, Sami Perillo, Brianna Rose, Izzy Reyes and Jamie Griffin.

Alan Burggren won first place and Miranda DeVito earned second place at the Regional Bridge Competition held at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
Burggren and DeVito are members of the bridge team at Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox.
Lincoln-Way North High School senior Olivia Krakowski, of Frankfort, received the Midwest Achievement Award and President’s Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
She is the daughter of James and Anna Krakowski, of Frankfort.
South Suburban All-Conference mathletes at Bremen High School in Midlothian include seniors Vanessa Cortez and Allison Milen; juniors Angel Garcia, Eduardo Aceves, Jon Mayoros and Jacob Zarobsky; sophomore Quinn Nguyen; and freshman Damian Behymer.
