CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Will County is seeking volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system.
Informational meetings will be held in three locations to anyone interested in being trained with this nonprofit organization. The sessions will be:
Nov. 12, 6 p.m. at Manteno Public Library, 10 S. Walnut St., Manteno.
Nov. 14, 6 p.m. Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook.
Nov. 20, 6 p.m. Frankfort Public Library, 21119 S. Pfeiffer Rd., Frankfort.
CASA volunteers act as Guardians Ad Litem (GAL) in court cases involving minors who are often the victims of abuse or neglect.
Among their duties are investigating the child’s circumstances, becoming the judge’s eyes and ears, monitoring compliance with court orders, or advocating for successful placement in a permanent loving home.
“CASA would not be able to serve children in need without our volunteers,” said Rita Facchina, executive director of CASA of Will County. “We are always in need of new volunteers who are willing to dedicate their time and efforts to this great cause.”
Volunteers receive 33 hours of pre-service training and must commit approximately 10-15 hours per month of volunteer service and must meet a minimum age requirement, completion of a criminal background and personal reference check and a personal interview. Training is conducted quarterly, with the next session Jan. 25 and the subsequent one tentatively scheduled in April 2014.
In 2012, the organization served 274 abused and neglected children in Will County, representing 50 percent of the children that came into care. Another 83 children were not served due to a lack of volunteers. CASA’s long-term goal is to represent 100 percent of the children who need such care.
