The Lincoln-Way North High School Varsity Phoenix Firebirds poms squad is headed to state after capturing first place at the Wheaton-Warrenville South competition.

The 17-member squad delivered a high-powered, crowd-pleasing poms routine with a “Wizard of Oz” theme.

“As a squad, we did not know what to expect at our first competition, but the judges seemed to be impressed with our routine,” coach Monica Bozek said. “The girls have worked hard and need to continue to have the energy and motivation to excel at our next four competitions. The squad’s goal is to raise our score at each competition.”

Members of the Varsity Firebirds are: Brandy Huppert, Bailey Stremlau, Kendal Sykes, Haley Collins, Jenna McKenna, Alyssa Borsellino, Amanda Kemp, Rebecca Garcia, Rachel Trudeau, Colleen Laughlin, Victoria Gutkin, Stephanie Hinkleman, Casey Houlihan, Elizabeth Warkocki and Jordin Richards.

Team captains are Katie Bakouris and Danielle Ward.

The squad will head to Peoria in March for the state competition.
