Seventh-grader Joshua Perch recently won Mokena Junior High School’s annual Geography Bee. Sixth-grader Connor Smith was second.

Other students who qualified to compete at the bee were Carson Calderon, Adam Contreras, James DiFiore, Bailey Leavy, Taylor Miron, Andy Schlott, Jake Soltis and Justas Varpucanskis.

The school-level bee was part of the nationwide National Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

In order to qualify as a semifinalist in the competition, the 10 semifinalists had to rank among the highest-scoring students on a written test, which students in all of the social studies classes at Mokena Junior High took in December.

The winner of the Geography Bee will take a written, multiple-choice test to compete for advancement to the state competition. As many as 100 of the highest-scoring students in Illinois may advance to state on March 30.

The winner in each state will advance to the National Geography Bee on May 22 in Washington, D.C.
