The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Theta Rho Omega Chapter recently awarded monetary scholarships to eight area high school graduates who graduated in the upper third of their classes.
Students who were honored at a ceremony at Flossmoor Public Library include Micahela Boyd (Thornwood High School); Brittany Cline and Deana Williams (Marian Catholic High School); Nia Green, Ramot Adeboyejo and Rhejass White (Rich Central High School); Kandice Head (Rich South High School); and Christina Robinson (Thornton Fractional South High School).
Fai Thompson, a 2011 Theta Rho Omega Scholarship recipient and students at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, gave a key note speech during the ceremony. Thompson shared how she adjusted to university life, managed her time, talents, study habits and finances.
“Each of these young ladies demonstrated excellence in academic achievement, participated in extracurricular activities and performed many hours of community service,” said scholarship officials in a news release.
The Theta Rho Omega Scholarship Committee selected the scholarship recipients through an application process and an oral interview session. Scholarships totaled $14,000.
