Four Southland teachers will be among 29 recognized for outstanding achievement at a Thursday luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield with the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois Education Association and the Illinois Federation of Teachers.

The educators were chosen as the best in their field of expertise during the 2011-12 school year by their respective professional education organizations.

Named as a “star in the classroom” by the Illinois Council for Economic Education were Carita Hall, of High Point School in Orland School District 135; Wendy Hegarty, of Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort; and Peg Seaman, of Andrew High School in Tinley Park.

The Illinois Art Education Association selected Greg Petechki, of Homewood-Flossmoor High School, as its secondary art educator of the year.

Thursday’s event will be the second annual Exemplary Teacher Recognition Award Luncheon hosted by the state board and the two state teacher associations.

“These are teachers who go above and beyond expectations on a daily basis,” state Supt. Christopher A. Koch said. “They are professionals who set a high bar for themselves and work with the best interest of their students in mind at all times.”
