Commuters who ride the train to and from Flossmoor can say goodbye to the crumbling platform and stairs at the Metra station.
A new station is on its way in downtown Flossmoor, village manager Bridget Wachtel said.
“Our station is slated to be reconstructed, which it does need. It’s Metra’s project from start to finish, but they’ve included us in some of the project discussion,” Wachtel said.
Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said the $5 million project is scheduled to begin in April and will be financed by the state. Architect’s renderings are not yet available, but picture the old station being completely renovated.
“Essentially, we are rebuilding the station,” Gillis said. “There’s going to be new platforms, new canopies, a new warming house and shelters. We will repair the stairs and the ramps, and there will be new lighting.”
Wachtel said plans for the new station at Flossmoor Road and Sterling Avenue has residents and commuters excited.
“The current platform and station are certainly showing wear and tear,” she said. “... We do get complaints about the stairwell. It’s falling apart. It’s old and worn, and the doors aren’t tight any more. It’s in bad shape.”
Having a new Metra station in the heart of the village is a “very positive step for the village. We recently redid our downtown streetlights and (Metra) is permitting us to have compatible lighting in the station,” Wachtel said.
The Flossmoor project will be the latest in a series of new Metra stations in the Southland. Oak Forest recently broke ground on its new depot. In recent years, Orland Park and Midlothian have built new stations, and Tinley Park has rebuilt both of its stations, most recently the 80th Avenue station.
“We do what we can,” Gillis said.
