Bremen High School District 228’s industrial technology department recently held its first District Bridge Break Off.
The event highlighted students and curriculum from the district’s mechanics and technology classes and featured a competition to see which student could design the most efficient bridge.
Bridge efficiency was determined by comparing the weight of the bridge structure to the amount of weight the bridge could hold before it collapsed. Each school sent four students (the top two from each class) to represent their respective classes and school.
Representatives were chosen by having individual class competitions using the same rules as the final competition. Once the finalists were chosen, they built a new bridge to use in the final competition.
During the final competition, all bridges were weighed and then loaded with weight. Under competition rules the bridge had to hold the weight for 10 seconds.
At the end of the 10 seconds, the bridge was deemed stable and additional weight was loaded in. Upon collapse, the final weight added was removed and the remaining weights were weighed. After the conclusion of the individual weighing, the champions were crowned. The winning student also won a pizza party for his or her classroom.
