The eighth-grade girls basketball team from Southwood Middle School in Country Club Hills won Illinois Elementary School Association regional and sectional titles.
The team, coached by Burnetta Mack and assistant coach Jazmine Mack, had a record of 17-0 after the sectional tournament win. The last time the team had a record this stellar was in 2007 when it earned second place in the IESA state tournament.
This year’s team is packed with talent and speed. During the regular season it held a roster of 11 girls: Diamond Burks, Jaylyn Dillard, Chyna Goodwin, Cymone Goodrich, Jada Harris, Imani Hicks, Vivian Imarenezor, Simona Jackson, Marcia Jones, Mica Keaton and Lauryn Murphy.
For postseason play, three players were added: Jasmine Dickerson, Jania Owens and Olivia Perry. These three were star players on the seventh-grade team in the regular season.
“This team’s skill level is above and beyond what was expected at the beginning of the season,” Burnetta Mack said. “Through all adversities they have come out as winners.”
