Flossmoor residents can fan their flames more freely.
The village board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the inclusion of fire pits into the village’s municipal code.
Previously, the only open flames allowed outdoors were restricted to cooking purposes.
“Each year we receive numerous requests for fire pits,” Assistant Fire Chief Keith Damm told the board.
Residents may burn seasoned firewood or commercial logs but not yard waste or garbage, he said.
Propane fire pits also are allowed.
“The fire pits will be restricted in size to 6 square feet, and they must be located 15 feet from any structure and 10 feet from property lines,” he said.
Mayor Paul Braun called the ordinance “housekeeping.”
“Fire pits have been around for so long,” he said. “We’re just keeping up with the times here.”
Village administrator Bridget Wachtel agreed.
“We recognize these are a part of outdoor living space and suburban life,” she said.
