Two student-athletes from Homewood School District 153 excelled at the Area 7 Special Olympics Games held recently at Thornwood High School in South Holland.

Neal Caauwe, a seventh-grader at James Hart School, and Marc Ramirez, a fifth-grader at Millennium School, both medaled at the local competition.

Ramirez, a first-time participant, earned a silver medal in the 50-meter run and came in fourth place in the softball throw.

In addition to a silver medal in the softball throw, Caauwe took the gold medal in the 50-meter run, qualifying him for the state Special Olympics Games at Illinois State University in Normal.

In March, Caauwe qualified for the state winter games in basketball skills where he earned a fourth-place finish.
