The village of Homewood recently received two first-place awards at the City-County Communications and Marketing Association 2013 Savvy Awards.
“You’re In the Right Place,” the overall rebranding campaign launched in 2012, and “Zombie Paradise,” the social media component of the “You’re in the Right Place” campaign, each received first place in the Communication & Marketing Tools/Digital Interactive/Social Media category.
The Savvy Awards competition recognizes outstanding local government achievements in communications, public-sector marketing and citizen-government relationships.
“The judges liked the simplicity of Homewood’s ‘You’re in the Right Place’ campaign. It is easy to remember and flexible to use,” said Scott Lehtonen, a spokesman for the association. “The judges also felt that while Homewood is serious about attaining the goal of its branding as ‘the right place’ for young families, the village isn’t afraid to have a bit of fun ... as evidenced by the zombie videos. The judges felt the ‘Zombie Paradise’ campaign was very effective in bringing the community together to celebrate the attributes of Homewood and in getting people to talk about it.”
The “You’re in the Right Place” campaign was the brainchild of Rachael Jones, Homewood’s public relations and marketing manager. The campaign included a new visual identity that embodies the message and the creation of experiences for brand interaction, using events as the catalyst for media coverage, according to a news release from the village. In the past year Homewood has issued more than 40 new business licenses and seen a dramatic increase in residential permits for home improvements.
“This has been an extremely successful campaign,” Jones said. “Our residents have embraced the idea of being in ‘the right place’ because that is how many of us feel. That energy is contagious and has brought positive attention to perspective Homewoodians.”
“Zombie Paradise” is a series of three 60-second videos featuring Homewood residents in zombie makeup enjoying the many amenities of Homewood with non-zombie residents. The idea was generated from discussions with residents on how to best utilize social media outlets to communicate the message that Homewood is an inclusive, creative and convenient community to live in.
The videos, directed by Homewood resident Jesse Deyo, were produced and posted on YouTube with a strategy to engage conversation on social media platforms.
