Here is a look at what Southlanders in the SouthtownStar’s East region are accomplishing in school.

News includes Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills.

Hillcrest High School

Seniors Claudia McGee, Janay Stowers, Fabie Ezife and Kayla Patrick; junior Tara Pollard; and sophomores Sheena Jones, Akiyah Lee and Kendra Presley, all of the girls tennis team at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, volunteered their time to the Special Olympics of Illinois tennis finals.

They served as ball girls, escorting the competitors to the stations of competition and helping make sure the event went smoothly.

When asked about their experience, the most common response was that they had fun.

“I had a great time being able to serve others using my talents,” Lee said.

“I have never been more proud of these girls,” head coach Christopher Hennessy, who led the service project, said.

“We first did this for the area finals and three athletes were able to help. Word spread from those three what a great time they had at area, which led to nine staying after practice, giving up their Saturday afternoon and volunteering for the state competition.

“These girls are winners before playing their first match of the season. What a wonderful opportunity for these young ladies to give back to the sport they love!”
