A four-unit townhouse building in Matteson was heavily damaged by fire late Sunday night, displacing five or six residents, Fire Chief Ed Leeson said.
He said one woman was treated at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields for smoke inhalation and released.
Firefighters were called to the building, 55 Churn Road, minutes before midnight and found that a fire in a Cadillac Escalade that was parked outside the garage had spread to the homes over the garage, Leeson said, adding that the cause of the SUV fire is under investigation.
He said none of the damaged units was habitable. The Red Cross was called to the scene, but no one needed help, the chief said.
About 10 or 12 fire departments helped Matteson battle the blaze, and a second alarm was sounded at 1 a.m. because outside crews were needed to man Matteson’s fire stations, Leeson said.
