Seventh- and eighth-grade honors theatre students at Colin Powell Middle School in Matteson recently performed the play “Smoldering Fires” by Kermit Frazier.

The play tells the story of two unlikely friends growing up in the inner city. Together the boys share a dream of cleaning up their sometimes violent, drug-infested urban neighborhood.

When tragedy strikes one of the boys, playgoers are taken on a historical journey involving Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement’s Children’s Crusade.

“Through this play, students explored a significant piece of history and were able to relate it to our current society,” said director Kristin Mathews.

The set was designed under the direction of Ann Szara and the eighth-grade honors art students.
