FBI: Fugitive from Richton Park surrenders

After more than two years on the run, a Richton Park man turned himself in Tuesday in connection with a December 2009 bank robbery in Country Club Hills, according to the FBI.
Corey Frierson, 27, whose last known address was 5131 Riverside Drive, was the last of three men apprehended in the armed robbery of the First Midwest Bank, 4101 W. 183rd St.
The FBI said Frierson called its Chicago office Tuesday morning, saying he was tired of life on the run, and agreed to surrender. At a hearing later Tuesday in federal court in Chicago, he was ordered held without bail, according to the FBI.
FBI spokesman Ross Rice said the agency had “no credible leads” in finding Frierson, even though the search was featured on the “America’s Most Wanted,” and “Chicago’s Most Wanted” TV shows. Rice said Frierson was last seen near Lexington, Miss., in April 2010 when he was stopped by a police officer for a traffic offense and fled on foot into the woods.
Authorities said two masked robbers entered the bank branch on Dec. 22, 2009 armed with assault weapons and ordered employees to empty their cash drawers into a bag and lie on the floor.
They escaped with nearly $53,000, yelling “Merry Christmas” as they left the bank and fled in a minivan with Boyd as the alleged driver, according to court records. They indicated that the bandits abandoned the minivan in a strip mall and took off in a gray they had parked earlier.
Shortly after the robbery, Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch and police tracked and arrested three men for the holdup. The men were released without charges and later sued the city, Welch and the officers for false arrest.
