A Markham man led police on a high-speed chase just after 6 a.m. July 1 after he was seen using a sledge hammer to break into Toys R Us, 5001 W. 211th St. in Matteson, police said.
They said once inside the toy store, William R. Morris, 49, of 162 S. Laflin Ave., filled a garbage can with about $1,350 in electronics and video game systems, loaded the can into his vehicle and then exited on Cicero Avenue, where police were waiting for him.
A chase ensued on Cicero Avenue to Sauk Trail, where Morris drove onto Interstate 57 going northbound in the southbound lanes, causing several vehicles to pull aside to get out of the way, they said.
Police said Morris crashed in a field and then fled on foot and was eventually caught in a back yard in the 5300 block of Crosswind Drive in Richton Park. They said Morris was charged with three counts of burglary, including the July 1 incident and similar burglaries at the toy store on June 10 and 23.
