Park Forest Fire Chief Robert Wilcox announced he’s planning to retire March 29, ending a 40-year career in the public sector.

He has been the chief in Park Forest since March 2006, after 21 years in Matteson.

Wilcox became a firefighter in 1973 in Bishop, Texas, about 30 miles southwest of Corpus Christi. He moved to Illinois in 1976 and has served in numerous fire departments throughout the state, including Fort Sheridan, Highland Park and Highwood.

Wilcox holds a master’s degree in public administration.

Park Forest Mayor John Ostenburg said he congratulated Wilcox on his retirement.

“On behalf of the citizens of Park Forest, I express to him deepest thanks for his commitment to health and safety in our community and in our region,” Ostenburg said in a news release. “Chief Wilcox has served us well, and he deserves our thanks and public recognition for a job well done.”
