Marian Catholic High School
Several area students were awarded academic letters from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights. The academic letter is awarded to a student who receives 4.0 or higher grade-point average in two consecutive semesters. The students include:

Hillcrest High School
Hillcrest High School’s Mock Trial team earned a second-place finish in the fourth annual 6th District Court’s Mock Trial competition.
The Country Club Hills school outmatched Mother McAuley, of Chicago; Homewood-Flossmoor, of Flossmoor; Thornton Fractional South, of Lansing; Thornton Fractional North, of Calumet City; Rich South, of Richton Park; Southland College Prep, of Richton Park, and other high schools.
In finishing second overall, Deborah Agoye, Clarence Amos, Tondalaha Davis, Penny Ford, Darron Gilton, Morgan Greene, Randle Ross, Alexis Simmons and Bria Starks missed first place by just one point.
Each team member received a $2,500 scholarship to John Marshall Law School for their performance in the competition and several students received offers to clerk for judges and attorneys this summer. Attorney Eddie Olivieri helped coach the team this year.
Hillcrest High School
Several Hillcrest High School DECA team members earned the opportunity to compete in the state DECA Career Development Conference in Decatur this month.
DECA is an association of high school and college marketing students that prepares them for leadership in marketing, finance, hospitality and management careers. Students participate in career-oriented role plays, economics tests and career cluster examinations.
To qualify for state, students competed in DECA’s Chicago South Region contest at Moraine Valley Community College with students from 14 other schools. Students who earned first-, second- or third-place medals qualified for the state meet.
This year’s state-bound members included Crystal Haywood and Ashlee Smith, hospitality services marketing team; Jasmine Pritchard, retail merchandising; and Virgil Stanford, sports and entertainment marketing. The Hillcrest High School DECA advisor is Mike Cicirale.
Steger District 194
Steger School District 194 honored the winners of the districtwide grade-level spelling bees.
The district includes Columbia Central Middle School, Eastview Elementary School and Parkview Elementary School, all in Steger, and Saukview Elementary School in South Chicago Heights.
Winners of the third- and fourth-grade division are Milan Yapp, first, Parkview; Amanda Moen, second, Parkview; and Nino Marino, third, Eastview. Fifth- and sixth-grade winners are Jimmy Erickson, first, Eastview; Matthew Brei, second, Parkview; and Raquell Trevino, third, Parkview. Toping the seventh- and eighth- grade division are Karina O’Harrow, first; Jacob Burnett, second; and Hailey Bulanda, all of Columbia Central.
Hillcrest High School
Hillcrest High School’s Business Professionals of America students competed in the Work Place Skills Assessment Competition at Andrew High School in Tinley Park.
More than 300 students from 12 schools participated. Hillcrest had 18 students qualify for the state competition.
They include Aliyah Turner, Angelic Hankerson, Armereel Everett, Carolina Reyes, Ciara Monroe, DeNae Rodgers, Elijah White, Jacqueline Cruz, Jalen Temple Tooks, Jasmine Perkins, Jasmine Ragland, Kadreonna Hughes, Karissma Harris, Kiara Dryer, Lakyia Gray Chambers, Mackia Gunn, Melissa Fumbanks and Moshood Adeyemo.
