Thorn Creek Nature Center, 247 Monee Road, Park Forest, will celebrate ash trees for Earth Day from noon to 4 p.m. April 20.
Andrea Dierich, forest pest outreach coordinator at the Morton Arboretum, will make a presentation about ash trees at 1 p.m. Learn how to identify different types of ash trees and how to protect them from the emerald ash borer, which feeds exclusively on ash trees.
Exhibits of ash trees and the emerald ash borer, courtesy of University of Illinois Extension and the Morton Arboretum, will be on view showing specimens of the insect and the tunnels its larvae make in the bark of the trees.
Jon Mendelson will lead a hike in the woods later in the day. There will be a raffle, refreshments and activities throughout the day.
The program is free and open to all ages. Registration is not required.
Thorn Creek Nature Center is open from noon to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays. Trails are open daily from dawn to dusk.
