Students from Southland College Prep Charter High School in Richton Park were presented with proclamations from village officials for their first-place finish in the Illinois High School Association speech state finals.
Morgan Brown, of Matteson, and Alexus Newson, of Park Forest, took first place in Dramatic Duet Acting. In February, they took first in Dramatic Duet Acting in the regional at Southland College Prep. They later placed second in the sectional at Reavis High School in Burbank, which sent them to the state finals.
Brown also placed second in Oratorical Declamation at the regional. She took first place in the Chicago finals of the August Wilson Monologue competition at the Goodman Theatre.
The Southland College Prep junior, who aspires to be an attorney, won a $500 prize, a partial scholarship to University of Illinois-Chicago and an all-expenses-paid opportunity to travel to New York City in May to compete in the national August Wilson Monologue Competition.
Newson placed third in Prose Reading in the regional.
Both girls are members of the National Honor Society.
“We are more than happy to applaud these students for representing their school and communities in the areas of speech and dramatic arts,” Richton Park Mayor Rick Reinbold said.
