Richton Park’s community development department is celebrating Building Safety Month throughout May to help raise awareness about the topic.
This year’s theme is “Building Safety Month: Code Officials Keep You Safe.”
A specific area involving building safety is being spotlighted each week. Fire and safety awareness was May 6 to 12, disaster safety and mitigation is May 13 to 19, backyard and pool safety is May 20 to 26, and energy and green building from May 27 to 31.
“When our building safety and fire prevention experts inspect buildings during and after construction, they help to ensure that the places where you live, learn, work, worship and play are safe,” community development director Regan Stockstell said. “Ensuring public safety is something we think about and do every day, working with homebuilders, plumbers, roofers and other construction industry trades and contractors.”
Building codes address all aspects of construction, from structural to fire prevention, plumbing and mechanical systems, and energy efficiency.
“Public safety is our No. 1 concern,” Stockstell said. “During Building Safety Month and all year long, building safety and fire prevention officials are here to help protect you, your family and our community.”
Building Safety Day is scheduled for June 1 at the Richton Park Community Center, 4445 Sauk Trail. There will be workshop discussions on the four themes, and vendors from the Illinois Sprinkler Association, ComEd, NICOR, CEDA and The Home Depot.
Staff will visit local elementary schools in May to give presentations on building and fire safety.
The International Code Council is the sponsor of Building Safety Month.
