The Rich Central High School football team was joined in its summer practice by a squad of Marines led by Capt. Dan Kinney.

Invited by Head Coach Dave Connell, the Marines were there to share with the student athletes Marine leadership traits and how they apply to teamwork both on and off the field.

Working first in the classroom to discuss traits such as judgment, tact, endurance, initiative, knowledge, integrity, loyalty, bearing, dependability and courage, the student athletes were broken down into small groups to define each word and apply it to the team and the individual both on the field and off of it.

Quinton Perkins said “it is depending on each other to keep out of wrong situations and to do the right thing.”

When asked what the words meant, Marion Waltower stated they mean “dealing with people with respect” while teammate Darius Anthony added “it means respecting teachers and treating the team as a brotherhood.”

After the discussion phase, the team moved outside to see if they could put their lessons on teamwork into action with a little phase one training, Marine style.

Broken into four squads, the student athletes were given tasks to complete that would require them coming together and working as a team to complete both mentally and physically. Chin-ups, squad pushups and squats don’t seem difficult but when pushed to work cohesively, the student athletes learned the traits they discussed were more than just words and formed a strong basis for the teamwork needed for the coming season.
