Free archaeological lecture

The South Suburban Archaeological Society presents a free illustrated lecture titled “Excavating Camp Douglas — A Chicago Civil War Prison Camp” by David Keller, managing director of the Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Marie Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave., Homewood.

Genealogical society

The Illiana Jewish Genealogical Society meets at 2 p.m. Sunday at B’nai Yehuda Beth Sholom, 1424 W. 183rd St., Homewood, where Maggie Goldberg, executive director of the Michiana Jewish Historical Society, will present “The Family Tree Project.” Information: ijgs.home.comcast.net.

MATTESON

Parenting conference

Rich Township High School District 227 presents the second annual Parenting in the 21st Century Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn Chicago Matteson Conference Center, 500 Holiday Plaza Drive, for district parents and parents of seventh- and eighth-graders from Elementary School District 159, Country Club Hills School District 160, Matteson School District 162 and Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163.

Homeowner orientation

Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs will rehab and equip three and four-bedroom homes in Chicago Heights, Park Forest and Lansing.

An orientation session at 10 a.m. Saturday at New Faith Baptist Church, 25 Central Ave., Matteson, will cover the application process.

OAK FOREST

Parade sign-up

Registration is due Friday for the Oak Forest Veterans Commission’s second annual I Am An American Day parade at 11 a.m. Sept. 1 on Central Avenue from 151st to 156th streets.

The parade will lead to the Oak Forest Park District’s Old Times Picnic.
