Pizza contest cooks up pantry funds

Updated: October 2, 2013 6:16AM

The “Golden Pizza Awards” brought together five Richton Park pizzerias — Aurelio’s, Beggars, Chicago Dough, Dominos and Papa John’s — for the opportunity to earn bragging rights among residents and raise money for the Rich Township Food Pantry.

The Richton Park village trustees, village employees and Rich Township presented a check to Vicky Sline, Rich Township pantry director, for $1,260. The funds will go toward pantry supplies and food for families and residents in need.

“It is our pleasure to present this check to the Rich Township Food Pantry which plays such a pivotal role in our community,” Richton Park Mayor Richard Reinbold said.

Beggars Pizza and Aurelio’s Pizza were the top pizzeria winners.

A Salvation Army Extension Unit, the pantry provides food at no cost to low-income township or Park Forest residents who meet the U.S. Department of Human Services guidelines and offers utility assistance on a limited basis to people who qualify, according to the township website.
