Richton Park Benjamin O. Davis VFW Post 311 received the “2013 National Outstanding Community Service Award” from the National VFW.
The award sign was recently installed on Sauk Trail.
Post Vice Cmdr. Leon Jeffries Sr. said the post’s events and activities included blood drives, the Veterans Day Parade, two fundraisers — at which more than 3,500 poppies were distributed — and hospital visits.
Jeffries said veterans outreach events supplied more than 150 veterans with resources for health, employment and other benefits, offered free haircuts, and breakfast and lunch for veterans, while also supporting the VFW National home in Michigan with donations for children who are dependents of veterans.
VFW commanders’ special projects included Operation Uplink donations, submissions for the VFW annual scholarship, various youth engagement activities and other monetary donations.
The post plans to continue these activities and support local sports teams, collaborate with houses of faith and provide resources for veterans who are living in the community and beyond.
Post 311 also recently received “All American” status for all of the members’ hard work and dedication to the Richton Park community.
