Matteson-based School District 159’s Marya Yates School recently held a “Pumpkin Chunkin” event for its third- through fifth-grade grade students.
The students were challenged to apply science, engineering and math skills in order to hurl miniature “pumpkins,” using mechanical devices that the students designed.
The distance competition inspires creativity, ingenuity and teamwork, according to a news release from the school.
The event was part of an ongoing emphasis on creative ways to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math education into the school curriculum.
