Students at Woodgate Elementary School in Matteson recently had a bird’s-eye view and a rare opportunity to be a part of science, math and engineering at work through the village of Matteson’s recent water tower-raising project.
Woodgate Principal Nina Gregory King, village administrator Brian Mitchell, members of the public works department, and contractors used the project as a hands-on opportunity for the students to learn math, science and engineering through practical application.
Matteson’s west water tower, which sits just yards away from the main entrance of Woodgate School, was raised by 19 feet to match the height of the east tower and equalize the water pressure throughout the community.
The tower-raising increased water pressure and fire flow in areas such as The Point, Ridgeland Manor and Maple Brook, where pressures have been a concern, according to a press release.
Prior to the tower-raising, Woodgate’s third- through fifth-grade students donned hard hats and gathered outside the school to participate in measurement activities that mirrored those involved in the tank-raising process. They also visited the engineering contractor’s command post stationed in a trailer on the school grounds and learned first-hand the responsibilities of an engineer and the educational requirements to become one.
“This is a great opportunity for us to enhance our STEM curriculum and show our students the impact of science, math and engineering in our daily lives and in our communities,” King said in the release. “They now know how something as simple as running faucet water to brush your teeth is determined by science and math.”
