Rich South band seniors awarded $300K in college scholarships

Since 2006, members of the Rich South High School band program have been awarded about $14.6 million in talent and academic scholarships, Yolandus Douglas, director of instrumental music at the Richton Park school, said in a news release.

On Dec. 17 and 19, Kenwood Academy in Chicago hosted a musicians showcase for students to meet and talk with college and university band directors and representatives from all over the country. This was also an opportunity to audition for talent scholarships.

As a result, students were awarded more than $300,OOO in scholarships for college, the release said.

Some of the colleges and universities included are Clark Atlanta University, Miles College, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Kentucky State University, Jackson State University, Florida A&M University, Central State University and American Musical Dramatic Academy, the release said.
