An autopsy Saturday determined “thermal injures and the careless use of smoking materials” as the cause of death for an Oak Forest man in an apartment fire, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Stanley Chmura, 58, of the 5000 block of West 159th Street, was found in the living room after the fire was extinguished Thursday, Fire Chief Terry Lipinski said.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 1:30 a.m. and were able to contain the blaze to Chmura’s first-floor apartment
Chmura was revived at the scene, taken to South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest and then transferred to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where he died, Lipinski said.
Chmura was the divorced father of three sons, his brother Ed Chmura said.
