Here is a look at what Southlanders from the SouthtownStar’s Central region are accomplishing in school.
News includes New Lenox, Midlothian, Lemont, Tinley Park, Orland Park, Mokena, Homer Glen and Lockport.
Several mathletes from Lincoln-Way Central High School in New Lenox won the regional contest and earned first-place team and individual awards.
The mathletes are Michael Dybala, Pat Burke, John Christel, Maddie McLaughlin, Marc Veihl, Allison White, Dan Zolecki, Michelle Dundek, Tony Kestel, Lisa Meister, Jana Mudrock, Joe Onesto, Lars Torkelson, Kevin Triner, Allison White, Danijela Jackovich, Billy Munch, Andy Munch, Andrew VanderSchaaf, Beth Senese, Breanna Weiss, Vinnie DeBono, Alex Blachowicz, Nick Fazzini and Derek Jones.
Freshman Jeremiah McEwen, sophomore Staci Ficht, junior Morgan Hampton and senior Lucio Duarte were named students of the month at Bremen High School in Midlothian.
Senior Carly Tucker, junior Rebecca Eichwedel, sophomore Lauren May and freshman Clare Rachwalski were named students of the month for February at Lemont High School.
Several area students were named February students of the month at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox.
They include senior Brian Younker and sophomore Steve Westman, both of Tinley Park; sophomore Meghan Shea and freshman Emma Sulski, both of Orland Park; freshman Joe Strick, of Mokena; junior Nicholas Kutsulis, of Homer Glen; sophomore Alyssa Jurges, of New Lenox; and sophomore Micaela Niven, of Lockport.
Six students from Mount Assisi Academy in Lemont received Vicariate V Youth Leadership Awards.
They are Gina Serio, Margaret Sojka and Tessa Dearth, all of Chicago; Yesenia Shuman, of Palos Heights; Marykate Feldner, of Orland Park; and Katie Kokaska, of Tinley Park.
Several area students from Lockport Township High School placed in the top 34 percent of all competing teams at the 15th annual High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling.
Math team members are Jonas Aleksonis, John Pfeiffer, Alberto Davila, Jakub Klapacz, Michael Coladipietro, Alyssa Brehm, Jakob Elias, Jeremy Meeder, Dante Reese, Brett Milewski, Austin Kolmodin, Jacob Voltarel, Emily Miller, Jamie Schuh, Joanna Surowka, Brooke Bianchi, Andrew Ascencio, Stephan Del Rio, Sarah Cryer, Qing Chen, Rebecca Gullett, Joel Knize and Marcin Skolarus.
Several Lincoln-Way Central High School students were named Illinois State Scholars. They are:
