The cause of a Wednesday morning apartment fire in Midlothian is under investigation, a fire official said.

No one was home when the fire broke out in the second-floor unit of the apartment building in the 3300 block of 147th Street, where an adult and two teenagers lived, and no injuries were reported, Midlothian Deputy Fire Chief Dave Mager said.

When fire crews initially arrived on the scene at 10:40 a.m., there were reports of a missing child, but that turned out to be false, he said.

There was minor smoke damage to the third-floor apartment and the hallway, but no other tenants were displaced and the fire was contained to one unit, he said.

The fire, which started in the living room, had been burning for awhile, Mager said. Firefighters were on the scene for about one hour and were assisted by the Posen, Crestwood, Oak Forest, Robbins, Alsip and Country Club Hills departments, he said.

The state fire marshal’s office and the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System are assisting with the investigation. The cause does not appear to be suspicious, Mager said.
