The family of a Downers Grove woman killed in a crash in March is suing the Orland Fire Protection District and Crestwood firefighter allegedly responsible for her death.
The suit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court by the mother of Anasis Knox. It claims Patrick Bruce, 45, of Oak Forest, who was off duty, drove recklessly and caused Knox’s death.
Knox, 25, was killed March 1 when she lost control of her vehicle after it allegedly was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by Bruce on 167th Street near Oak Forest.
Knox’s family is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.
Bruce last month pleaded not guilty to a felony reckless homicide charge. Prosecutors said he was taking pain medication at the time of the crash and was speeding and weaving between lanes before the crash. They said his SUV at one point crossed into oncoming traffic, slamming into Knox’s vehicle.
Bruce also is charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and reckless driving and is next due in court May 17.
Bruce has been on leave from the Orland fire district, where he works as a lieutenant, since July because of a work-related injury. He also works part time as deputy fire chief in Crestwood.
