An Oak Forest man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexually assaulting a young family member over a period of four years, authorities said.
Luis Pereira, 48, pleaded guilty Thursday to predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to a statement from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office.
Pereira sexually assaulted the girl at her home in northwest suburban Hanover Park from April 2002 through April 2006, prosecutors said. An investigation began when the girl told her therapist what Pereira had done to her.
Pereira was arraigned on March 22 and has been in custody at the DuPage County Jail since then in lieu of $250,000 bail, the statement said.
“For four years, this young victim endured repeated sexual abuse from a man whom she thought could be trusted,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement. “Thanks to her courage, however, Mr. Pereira will be held accountable for what he did.”
Pereira will be required to serve about 9 1/2 years before he is eligible for parole and will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
