SD 228 Family Reading Night set for Nov. 20

Updated: December 18, 2013 6:02AM

The Second Annual District 228 Family Reading Night will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 20 at Oak Forest High School, 15201 S. Central Ave.

Two local authors will speak to students and community members.

Retired District 228 teacher Lou Macaluso is the author of several books.

“In Search of Sal” is a story inspired by the biography of actor and multimillionaire entrepreneur Sal DeVanno. The book was named one of Amazon.com’s top 10 novels, according to a news release about the event. Macaluso also wrote “The Warming Sicilian Son” in 2012, a novella about a Sicilian-American writer’s modern-day trip to Sicily and his grandfather’s early 20th century emigration from Sicily to New Orleans in search of the American dream. His first novel, “Clown Town,” was written in 2008.

Macaluso will discuss the process of self-publishing his first novel and the subsequent writing of his other two.

Lydia Ponczak, of Oak Forest, published “Who’s After Samantha.” Ponczak is writing her second book.

Ponczak is the host of the local cable access show “Views of the News,” which is shown in Oak Forest on Comcast Channel 4.
