The Richards High School speech team recently won the 19-team invitational at Bolingbrook High School. Last year, the Richards speech team placed fifth at the IHSA state finals.
At Bolingbrook, the Bulldogs won first place in half of the invitational’s 14 competitive categories.
Champions included Jason Warrior in poetry reading and dramatic interpretation; Amy Cyze in original oratory; Andrea Azem in oratorical declamation; Brendan Johnson in radio speaking; Effie Peroulas in informative speaking; and John Zahlmann in original comedy.
Richards also won second place in two categories and captured top-six finishes in seven others.
Earlier this season, the Richards speech team won second place at the Homewood-Flossmoor Invitational; second place at the Thornridge Invitational; second place at Santaburg Oaklaus; third place at the Lemont Pow Wow; and fourth place at both Marian Catholic and the Reavis Ram Yam.
