Queen of Peace High School senior Alicia Medina, of Chicago, has been selected as a 2012 Golden Apple Scholar of Illinois.
Golden Apple Scholar nominees are students who are interested in teaching as a career and have demonstrated academic excellence in the classroom and on standardized tests. Out of the 1,200 students who fit these credentials and tackled the application process, only 135 students were selected.
Medina soon will begin intensive internships, a mentoring program and a Summer Institute program throughout her college education in addition to earning a traditional degree.
“This supplementary education will prepare her to become an effective, innovative teacher in high-need, Illinois schools,” said school officials in a news release.
“Alicia’s evident leadership skills and commitment to education make her a role model for her peers and, inevitably, will make her a role model for her future students.”
