On the Monday after prom weekend, show choir students from Shepard High School arrived at school around 4 a.m.
If they felt sleepy, no one could tell. Full of adrenaline, anticipating the performance of their lives, they sang and danced live on the Channel 7 morning news show.
NOVA won selection as one of four groups in the Chicago area for the station’s Show Choir ShowDown. Students performed in front of their parents, friends and teachers from 5 to 7 a.m. Reporter Roz Veron interviewed students, choral director Michael Fallon and principal Josh Barron in-between songs.
Other schools selected to compete include Manteno, Mundelein and Eisenhower.
It’s been a year of noteworthy achievement for Shepard choirs. The Mixed Concert Choir, Honors Women’s Choir and, in their first IHSA event ever, the Men’s Choir each earned superior ratings (top mark possible) from all judges in the State Organizational Festival last month.
Amy Szymborski also won the Women’s Division Grand Champion of the Vocal Solo Contest at the Sullivan Show Choir Invitational in March. Choirs from Illinois, Indiana and Missouri competed.
