American Cancer Society Relay for Life committee members recently hosted the 10th annual Oak Lawn Community High School Survivor Dinner in the school’s media center. More than 50 cancer survivors, caregivers and family members attended the event.

Linda Dumas, a thyroid cancer and lymphoma survivor for 14 years and the mother of OLCHS English teacher Lauren May, was the keynote speaker.

Jennifer Wargin, a former Relay for Life chairperson and OLCHS art teacher, shared stories and photos of past Relay for Life events. Seniors Maria Vilarete and Tom Papaleo, and junior Jenna Hurckes presented on behalf of student committee members.

The culmination of the evening was when 17 new survivors’ painted handprints were added to the ever-growing “Handprints of Hope” wall at OLCHS.

The student council assisted with the event by creating favors for all guests and decorating the media center. Faculty organizers for the survivor dinner were Jennifer Sidlow, Jennifer Wargin, Tammy Tyeptanar and T.J. Zuzga.
