An Oak Lawn family was displaced by a fire Tuesday night that heavily damaged their house in the 9600 block of Keeler Avenue, fire officials said.
The fire broke out about 10 p.m. at the two-story home, but the three residents were able to escape safely, Fire Chief George Sheets said.
Homeowner Muhammed Gheith said he heard a popping sound outside the house and soon saw smoke coming from the basement. He, his wife and 14-year-old son fled the house, and neighbors called the fire department, Gheith said.
Sheets said it appeared to be an electrical fire, pending further investigation. He said Oak Lawn firefighters were assisted by other departments, and the fire was extinguished in about 45 minutes.
