Richards JROTC closes year with ceremony

The U.S. Navy Junior ROTC program from Richards High School recently closed the 2011-12 school year with its annual awards ceremony and change-of-command.
Cmdr. Douglas Groters (Ret.) and Chief Petty Officer Dennis Reynolds (Ret.), who manage JROTC at Richards, hosted the ceremony and presented the awards. Representatives from area veterans and patriotic organizations attended the ceremony to present awards.
The event included the naming of next year’s student commanders for Bulldog Company. Senior Kylla Pate will serve as executive officer and senior Randy Flaherty will serve as company commander.
Students who won Honor Cadet Ribbons for leading their academic classes in grade point average include senior Samir Youseftaha, junior Oleksandr Gorobets, sophomore Alex Villafuerte and freshman Robert Cook.
Students who won a Distinguished Cadet Ribbon for outstanding dedication to the JROTC program and academic excellence included senior Brianna O’Brien, junior Kylla Pate, sophomore Alex Villafuerte and freshman Thad Spyrnal.
Individual award winners included Samir Youseftaha, American Legion Medal for Scholastic Excellence; Brianna O’Brien, American Legion Medal for Excellence; Bleu Strong, Military Aptitude Award; Kylla Pate, Military Officers Association of America Leadership Award; and Greg Buckner, Surface Navy Association Award for Excellence.
Other individual award winners included Zhane Houston, Daughters of the American Revolution Award for Excellence; Gina Immordino, Veterans of Foreign Wars Leadership Medal; Michael Marlow, Sojourners Patriotism Medal; and Alex Villafuerte, Military Order of World Wars Leadership Medal.
Also individual winners included Kathleeen Spyrnal, Daedalians Excellence Medal; Thomas Barnes, Military Order of the Purple Heart Award; Tim Doran, Sons of the American Revolution Award; and Oleksandr Gorobets, Navy League Theodore Roosevelt Medal.
Other individual award winners included Alexis Torres, Coast Guard Award for Military Excellence; Alex Lorenz, Non-Commissioned Officers Association Service Medal; Randy Flaherty, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War Association Award; Thad Spyrnal, Surface Naval Associations 1st year cadet ribbon; and Angeles Ochoa-Raya, Celebrate Freedom Foundation Award for scholastic excellence.
Students who earned the American Veterans Medal for academic achievement, dedication to JROTC, and excellent military bearing included Thad Spyrnal, Angeles Ochoa-Raya, Devin Arnold, Emily Bargouthi, Benjamin Biskey, Robert Cook, Qwamarria Covington, Joshua Kamba, Brianna Kuchenny, Jacob Lange, Nicholas Rhoades, Michelle Tomlin and Lydell Tyler.
