Astrophysicist to host lecture on doomsday prophecy

Astrophysicist Kevin Manning will host “The Great 2012 Scare: Fact vs. Fantasy” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Warde Academic Center at St. Xavier University, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.
Manning will separate fact from fiction and discuss whether the Mayan calendar really predicts the end of the world on Dec. 21.
Manning is a retired astrophysicist who worked as a NASA consultant on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, NASA’s flagship X-ray telescope launched in 1999, and with the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. He received the Frank G. Brooks Award for Excellence in Science Research.
