Glen Oaks Elementary School Principal Gaylyn Grimm recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to represent the Hickory Hills school as it is recognized as a winner of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award.
Grimm traveled with senior teacher Debbie Olejarz. The two participated in a ceremony hosted by the United States Department of Education that recognized 269 schools from across the country as 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
The program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories. The first is Exemplary High Performing, in which schools are recognized as their state’s highest-performing schools.
The second category is “Exemplary Improving,” in which schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds demonstrate the most progress in improving student achievement levels as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
While Glen Oaks qualified for the second category, the school received the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for the first category.
