Moraine Valley Community College student Grecia Salgado, of Palos Heights, recently was selected as one of more than 1,000 undergraduate students from nearly 400 colleges and universities across the country and just one of 23 community college students awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad.
Salgado received the $4,500 scholarship to help pay for her spring semester program in Seville, Spain, at the International College of Seville and University of Seville. She is studying political science with a focus on international relations and will stay with a host family while abroad.
The Gilman Scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It aims to diversifying the student pool that studies abroad and the regions they travel to while preparing students for an interdependent world. Since it was established in 2000, more than 13,000 students have received the award.
Not only will Salgado take classes related to her major but learn about Spain’s history and get in touch with her own heritage.
“I’m Mexican; we have Spanish ancestry, and I want to find out my roots, my heritage,” Salgado said. “I’ve always wanted to study abroad. I have a younger sister, and I want to show her that you can do anything despite your struggles.”
