Three elementary schools in Cook County School District 130 received a special visit from Eisenhower High School National Honor Society members to kick off the National Education Association’s 16th annual Read Across America Day.

The Eisenhower National Honor Society held a book drive with dropoff sites including the Blue Island Public Library and Sandbox day care to collect books for students in District 130.

In their seventh year collaborating with District 130, National Honor Society members visited Paul Revere Primary and Greenwood schools in Blue Island and George Washington School in Alsip to distribute free books and read to students.

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss.

Read Across America Day is the nation’s largest reading celebration, with more than 45 million participating to highlight the importance of developing a love for reading at an early age.
