Greetings, fellow Oak Lawnians and Happy Easter!

The Musichorale community choir is proud to announce the winners of its annual scholarship competition in the instrumental category, which took place March 2.

Monet Lee, violinist, 1st place will receive a $1,000 scholarship to continue her music education. Silas Ferrao, violinist, 2nd place will receive $500. Nivedita Ravi, violinist, 3rd place will receive $250. Honorable mentions went to Katie Gallagher, violin; Michael Gans, guitar; and Michelle Jugovich, harp.

Monet will perform at Musichorale’s spring concert, “Melodies from your Memories” at 3:20 p.m. April 21 at Trinity Christian College’s Ozinga Auditorium, 6601 College Drive, Palos Heights. The concert will feature the songs of Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Etta James and Mozart.

Musichorale is also pleased to announce the addition of five new members. Margaret Podrazik, Theresa Wojdelski, Patricia Brayley, Luke Idaszewski and Jonathan Krogh will make their singing debut at the spring concert.

Kathy Marassa, now in her fourth year in Musichorale, said of the new members, “It’s wonderful. They add a whole new dimension to the group, and they bring new personalities to the choir.”

The choir has a long history in Chicago and the southwest suburbs. Jeffrey Silhan, its director for more than 30 years, took over for his father, Art, who founded the choir in 1947.

“The choir is in its 66th year of existence, and that’s quite an accomplishment,” Marassa said.

The current age range for the group is late 20s to 50s, but membership is also open to high school students.

“We have 75 voices, and we’re grateful and appreciative of every one of our members,” Marassa said, adding that the choir is growing and hopes to one day have 100 voices.

Membership is open to anyone in high school and older who enjoys music or singing. Musical background or knowledge of how to read sheet music is not required.

Anyone interested in visiting or joining the choir is invited to visit its rehearsals on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. at Oak Lawn Community Church, 9000 Ridgeland Ave.

Spring Concert tickets can be purchased in advance for $12 or $14 at the door. For tickets, call (773) 239-6279 or order online at www.musichorale.org. Ozinga Auditorium is handicapped-accessible and free valet parking will be available.
